EtymologyEdit
From the Latin Massilia, Marsilia, Massalia, from Ancient Greek Μασσαλία (Massalía), possibly an Ancient Ligurian toponym or perhaps from Ancient Greek μάσσων (mássōn) "further" + ἅλς (háls) “sea”, i.e. “(city) on far end of the sea” cf. Ancient Greek παραλία (paralía).
