From neuter plural of New Latin mastigophorus, from Ancient Greek μαστιγοφόρος (mastigophóros, scourge-bearing) +‎ -us, from genitive singular of μάστιξ (mástix, whip, scourge) +‎ -φόρος (-phóros, carrying, bearing).
