From neuter plural of New Latin mastigophorus, from Ancient Greek μαστιγοφόρος (mastigophóros, “scourge-bearing”) + -us, from genitive singular of μάστιξ (mástix, “whip, scourge”) + -φόρος (-phóros, “carrying, bearing”).
