  • (Haarlem) Compound of meer (lake) and wijk (neighbourhood, quarter). The neighbourhood is located close to the Haarlemmermeer.
  • (Uithoorn) First attested as meerwijc in 1290. Compound of Middle Dutch meere (pool, lake) and wyc (farmstead, village, settlement). The toponym references the neighbourhood's location between the Zijdelmeer lake and the Amstel river.
