1. (India, historical) The country on the coast below the ghats or passes leading up to the tableland of the Deccan.

Usage notes

• Used alone, the term usually referred to the west coast, while the expression "Carnatic Payen Ghaut" was applied to the low country of Madras on the east side of the Peninsula.
