Etymology edit
From older Pleistocän, borrowed from English Pleistocene. Coined by Charles Lyell in 1839. Equivalent to a corruption of a Latinised form of Ancient Greek πλεῖστος (pleîstos, “most”) + καινός (kainós, “new”).
