From Proto-Indo-European *bʰleh₁- (to howl, cry, bleat), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (to make a loud noise). Cognate with Latvian blēšana (to bleat), Russian бле́ять (bléjatʹ, to bleat), Latin fleō (cry, weep).
