Etymology

edit

Likely cognates outside Germanic are found with *t also, e.g. Ancient Greek πλατύς (platús), Lithuanian platùs, Sanskrit पृथु (pṛthú). These do not straightforwardly match the Germanic *t due to Grimm's law. Kroonen[1] proposes a derivation with a geminate, i.e. pre-Germanic *plottos, presumably from *plotnos via Kluge's law. This would make it derive from the Proto-Indo-European root *pleth₂-.
