editFrom Proto-Indo-European *reḱ- (“to bind”). Cognate with Proto-Germanic *rakkō (“parrel”) (whence Old English racca, Old Norse rakki), *rakindjaz (“chain”) (whence Old Norse rekendi).[1][2]
