Proto-Norse edit

Etymology edit

Probably from Proto-Germanic *warjaz (guardian). However, by Sievers' law, the -i- may indicate that the root vowel was long. If so, it could instead be related to Proto-Germanic *wēraz (true), Gothic 𐌰𐌻𐌻𐌰𐍅𐌴𐍂𐌴𐌹 (allawērei, sincerity, agreeability), and mean "loyal", "reliable".

Noun edit

*ᚹᚨᚱᛁᛃᚨᛉ (*warijaz /*warjaz/ or *warijaʀ /*wārijaz/) m

  1. defender, guardian; ward
  2. someone who is loyal, reliable
