According to Pokorny, the word may have originally meant "light," from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (to shine).[1] Probably cognate with Sanskrit बृहस्पति (bṛhaspati), Avestan bǝrǝg, Avestan bǝrǝǰayeiti.
