From Proto-Indo-European *(s)kreik-, ultimately of onomatopoeic origin. Cognate with Proto-Germanic *hraigrô (heron), Welsh crëyr (heron), Ancient Greek κρίζω (krízō, to creak, screech), Latvian krikа (laughing).
