From *svinъ +‎ *-ьcь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *śwīnas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱwi-no- (light-colored metal) or *ḱwī-no-.

Cognate with Lithuanian švìnas and Latvian svins.
