From earlier *smyzъ, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *smūˀź-, from Proto-Indo-European *smuHgʰ- / *smeuHgʰ-. Semantic development: “smoke, haze, fog” > “thickets” > “brushwood”. Cognate with English smoke, German Schmauch.
