From Middle High German sal, from Old High German sal, sali, seli, from Proto-West Germanic *sali, from Proto-Germanic *saliz, *salą, from Proto-Indo-European Proto-Indo-European *sel- (“human settlement, village, dwelling”).
Cognate with Dutch zaal, Swedish sal, Old English sele, Russian село́ (seló). Also cognate with French salle. Compare English salon.
