Schutzmacht
German
editEtymology
editFrom Schutz (“protection”) + Macht (“power, force”).
Pronunciation
editNoun
editSchutzmacht f (genitive Schutzmacht, plural Schutzmächte)
- (politics, military) protector (country protecting another or exercising a protectorate over some territory)
- (hence euphemistic) occupier, occupation force
Usage notes
edit- Until 1990, the four occupation powers were often referred to as Schutzmächte alongside the term Besatzungsmächte. Such usage was particularly common in West Berlin, where the population did indeed feel protected by the military presence.
