First attested as SlijckEwick in 1573. Derived from slijk (“soggy clay or peat, alluvial soil”) and a compound of Old Dutch a (“river, current”) and wijk (“settlement, village”). The euuic silec mentioned in 855 has been interpreted by some to refer to the settlement, but it is unlikely that this is the case. Compare Slijkwell.
