editFirst attested as spannum in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Spannum, of uncertain etymology. Potentially derived from the dative plural form of a term cognate to Old English spann (“span of a hand, strip of land”). Compare Spanbroek, Spang, Spanga and Spangen.
