About how “carnival” entered Chinese
editI wonder if there is any proof indicating that this word is borrowed into Chinese via Cantonese? My question comes from the fact that the original word doesn't have an "-n" after "carni-", while the Cantonese pronunciation is /ka nin wa/, with an /n/. By contrast, the Wu pronunciation doesn't have a -n ending in 年, and the vowel of 华(/o/) seems to be more similar to the original /əɫ/ than the Cantonese /a/ is. 辛时雨 (talk) 03:28, 5 November 2019 (UTC)
