Other than the literal sense of making a type of repair, to "calk off" seems to be dated military slang for napping, sleeping, or just lazing around. It's mentioned in Green's Newspeak (1984) and also here, though finding real usage is hard:
- 1920, Ralph Delahaye Paine, The Corsair in the War Zone (page 71)
- "Four bells" meant to move rapidly, and the weary sailor did not fall asleep, but "calked off."
