- keep. I'm French, and it is obvious to me that it's as much a set phrase as the English one. It's not fully necessary to include it to understand it when you read it, but it's necessary to include it to know that this is the precise phrase you must use when you want to express this idea. - Quite a few English dictionaries have an entry for this: Merriam-Webster, Oxford, American Heritage, Collins, Random House, Webster’s New World College Dictionary. Several list an English pronunciation that differs from the French /fot də mjø/. The fact that it is used without explanation in a non-French context strongly suggests the phrase has been adopted into English, just like air du temps, nom de guerre and trompe-l’oeil. --Lambiam 18:47, 30 January 2020 (UTC)
