A layer can be an abstract thing too, e.g. "mired in layers of deceit", or "MPEG-2 Audio Layer III" (the MP3 file format), where each layer represents something that the next most complex kind of audio decoder can handle. Equinox ◑ 14:01, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
