Is this a misconstructed singular form from sphragides (sphragis)? DTLHS (talk) 04:59, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

@DCDuring I am asserting that someone saw the form sphragides and assumed it was the plural of *sphragide, rather than the plural of sphragis (see the Latin inflection table). DTLHS (talk) 13:00, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

I don't see anything for "sphragides" in this sense in a cursory search- [1] at least uses both forms. DTLHS (talk) 13:19, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

I tried a similar search. That makes it hard for me to see how the misconstruction occurred. In French? Some kind of transfer from the other meanings (which I'm not sure were ever in English)? DCDuring (talk) 13:29, 4 July 2017 (UTC)

BTW: σφραγίς (sphragís) seems to have been used rather frequently and in many senses in Ancient Greek, probably much more than sphragis in Latin. DCDuring (talk) 13:36, 4 July 2017 (UTC)
