Usage edit

This template may be used on Wiktionary entry pages to quote Francis Bacon's work Sylva Sylvarum and New Atlantis (3rd edition, 1631); the 1st edition (London: [] VVilliam Rawley; printed by I[ohn] H[aviland and Augustine Mathewes] for William Lee [], 1627; →OCLC) is currently not available online. The template can be used to create a link to an online version of the work at the Internet Archive (also available at the HathiTrust Digital Library).

Parameters edit

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |century=, or |book=mandatory:
    • If quoting from Sylva Sylvarum, indicate the century referred to in the work in uppercase Roman numerals, from |century=I to |century=X.
    • If quoting from New Atlantis, use |book=New Atlantis.
  • |chapter=
    • When quoting from the main part of the work, if the century referred to in the work is subdivided into chapters, use this parameter to specify the chapter.
    • If quoting from the epistle dedicatorie or "To the Reader", specify |chapter=Epistle Dedicatorie or |chapter=To the Reader respectively. As these chapters are unpaginated, use |2= or |page= to specify the "page number" assigned by the Internet Archive to the URL of the webpage to be linked to. For example, if the URL is https://archive.org/details/baconsylvasylvarum/page/n10/mode/1up, specify |page=10.
  • |para= or |paragraph=, or |paras= and |paragraphs= – the paragraph number(s) quoted from. If quoting a range of numbers, separate the first and last numbers of the range with an en dash, like this: |paras=10–11.
  • |2= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.

In New Atlantis:

  • The page numbers restart from 1.
  • Page numbers 43 and 44 are reused at the end of the work. Specify the second set of page numbers as |page=43A and |page=44A.
  • |3=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
