English Word Defining ClubEdit

EWDC is temporarily closed: we had six good months and then a month when literally nobody did any of their words. I will probably reinstate it soon, when I make it a bit quicker and more automatic for me to generate people's words (without having to hunt down blue links etc.).

I hereby request more words that would actually survive RFV and that have been used in the last 100 years. DTLHS (talk) 01:52, 28 June 2018 (UTC)
Do you want the moon on a stick too? Your filtering algorithm is welcome. Equinox 01:54, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

Basically: we have a period of time (currently about a month) and a number of words (currently ten), and every period we have one round, where you are randomly assigned that many missing English words to define. And hopefully you will go digging and create some great entries. For more details, see the rules section below!

The source lists for EWDC will be kept secret because it's funnier that way. You will have no idea what you are gonna get.

Sign here, cuties.

EWDC rulesEdit

Where do the words come from?Edit

They come from various disparate word lists that Equinox has acquired and/or assembled (and are assigned to individual participants based on some hacky software that Equinox made while drunk). Inputs include the Sowpods (Scrabble) word lists; "new words" added by the OED in recent years; and the dreadful "lucky dip", which cannot be easily explained. It just is.

What do I do with my words?Edit

Basically we want to create entries for English words that are missing. But good entries. So: if (i) you can find out what it means, and (ii) you are pretty confident that it meets WT:CFI and so on, then just create the entry. If you are a staunch Wiktionarian then you might make a fancy entry with citations, pictures, translations, etc. But EWDC really just wants you to get the definition right. (That means don't trustingly copy nonsense from Urban Dictionary, SemperBlotto. Jesus Christ!)

I got a stupid word that doesn't exist; what now?Edit

Sometimes you might get some weird word that was only ever used by Shakespeare or some other disgusting historical white male. If you can identify the word but it doesn't meet CFI for some reason, then please don't create it, as this will make annoying RFV paperwork. You can either ignore it and let it go back into the pool, or you can bother Equinox and he might remove the word FROM ALL OF HISTORY with his time machine.

Do I have to inform EWDC about the entries I made?Edit

No, there will be a magical robot butler that checks that stuff. If there are no English entries for your words by the end of the current period then those words will go back into the huge and frankly terrifying WORD CAULDRON that they all come out of in the first place, and be stirred around a bit more, by a witch.

How should I pronounce "EWDC", when I brag about it to other people in Real Life?Edit

/ˈjuːdʌk/. Like: you-duck. There is an easy mnemonic for this if you happen to be a duck: just remember that YOU are a DUCK.

What is the dress code for the EWDC lounge?Edit

Gentlemen are expected to dress in black tie. Ladies may prefer a cocktail dress. Card-holding members who are dressed inappropriately will be made welcome, but might be asked to limit their visit to the saloon bar. Please do not complain to the management about how rude Qehath is. We hired him for that reason.
