editDialectal notation
editCase 1
editFor a word which in one dialect, replaces the corresponding word used in the Standard dialect.
Example 1:
گَٹھا • (gaṭhā) m (Gurmukhi spelling ਗਠਾ)
Example 2:
ਵੰਞਣਾ • (vãñṇā) (Shahmukhi spelling ونجݨا)
I have used "substitute" here instead of other terms like "dialectal synonym".
Tagging it as a "synonym" does not clarify that the word is used in place of the Standard one (i.e. that the Standard word is not used in the dialect). One may mistakenly interpret it as a dialect having synonym of a Standard word which is also used in said dialect. Thus, I used the term "substitute".
These variants could still be put under a "dialectal synonyms" heading, as they are still synonyms of the original word.
Some other possible examples:
Examples I deem inadequate:
- (Dhanni) Dialectal synonym of ਜਾਣਾ (jāṇā)
- (Dhanni) Synonym of ਜਾਣਾ (jāṇā)
- (Dhanni) Dialectal counterpart to ਜਾਣਾ (jāṇā)
- (Dhanni) Counterpart to ਜਾਣਾ (jāṇā)
Case 2
editFor a word which is unique to a dialect and does not replace a Standard word. This is the simplest case and can just take the dialect label with the definition.
Example:
