Foreign Word Notations of Korean edit

Foreign Word Notations of Korean(not official term, Korean: 외래어 표기법) are notations that define how to write foreign terms by Korean alphabet (Hangul).

Chapter 1: Principles of Notation (표기의 원칙) edit

  • Clause 1: Loanword must be written in 24 alphabets which are used by modern Korean.
  • Clause 2: One phoneme of foreign word is written in one symbol.
  • Clause 3: Use only '' /k/, '' /n/, '' /l/, '' /m/, '' /b/, '' /d, p, t/, '' /ŋ/ for the final consonants.
  • Clause 4: Never use characters indicate fortis for plosive.
  • Clause 5: Custom notations widely used are respected their convention but the range and application are set separately.

Section 1: Principes of Notation (표기 원칙) edit

  • Clause 1: Use rules from Chapter 1, 2, 3.
  • Clause 2: Names of languages that are not included in Chapter 3 shall follow the original pronunciation.
    • Ankara [ˈaŋkaɾa]: 앙카라 (Angkara)
    • Ghandi [ˈɡaːnd̪ʱi]: 간디 (Gandi)
  • Clause 3: It is tolerated if the name is commonly used in pronunciation of a third country, not original.
    • Hague (Den Haag [dɛn ˈɦaːx], 덴 하흐 Den haheu): 헤이그 (Heigeu)
    • Caesar ([kae̯.sar], 카이사르 Kaisareu): 시저 (Sijeo)
  • Clause 4: If the translation of proper noun is prevailing, it shall be allowed.
    • Pacific_Ocean (퍼시픽 오션 Peosipik osyeon): 태평양 (taepyeongyang)
    • Black_Sea (블랙 시 Beulaek si): 흑해 (heukhae)

  • Clause 1: Every sea is written with '해(海 hae)' as suffix.
  • Clause 2: Every island is written with '섬(seom)' as suffix, but not Korean island.
  • Clause 3: If the name of the place where the Chinese character is used (Japan, China), '강(江 gang)', '산(山 san)', '호(湖 ho)', '섬(seom)' are written together.
  • Clause 4: Although the names of place have meanings such as mountain range, mountain, and river, '산맥(山脈 sanmake)', '산(山 san)', '강(江 gang)' are written together.
