Welcome edit

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! --2A02:2788:A4:F44:854:44D:6673:34A5 19:59, 8 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Yes, but 5,395 edits over 10 days, including 8 in one minute yesterday, tells me you're using a bot for most of your edits. It's theoretically possible to do that with a fast computer and a tabbed browser, but highly unlikely. There's nothing wrong with that (as far as I can tell, the edits are correct), except that you have to have your bot approved, and you need to operate on an account/ip with a bot flag. Those of us who go though Special:RecentChanges looking for vandalism don't need hundreds of extra edits to wade through, especially since the system only shows the last 1,000 unpatrolled non-bot-flag edits- at the moment, that's just 10 hours worth. See WT:BOT for the details. Chuck Entz (talk) 23:47, 11 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'm not saying that anon is in the right for making so many edits, but this is totally feasible ("with a fast computer and a tabbed browser"). I've done this before.

Get an account bro. It'll look less suspicious —suzukaze (tc) 23:52, 11 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
I agree, these are very simple edits and it's easily possible to edit this fast. Editing quickly isn't a reason for a block even if it is annoying. DTLHS (talk) 23:54, 11 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'm not using a bot, all my edits have been manual. All I'm doing involves pasting a template, sometimes needing a parameter input, into all the members of a category (which I'm opening in tabs about 50 at a time). It's very easy and repetitious to do several articles a minute given the highly standardized layout of Wiktionary articles. I have been trying to do them quickly as possible and I apologize if this seems suspicious. 86.130.177.172 04:34, 12 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
Have you been visually verifying that the markup entered by the template is correct? (In reference to diff). --Dan Polansky (talk) 09:45, 12 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
@Dan Polansky: what do you mean? That particular example seems unproblematic to me. --Barytonesis (talk) 12:08, 12 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'm not saying the example is wrong. What I mean is, does the editor automatically assume {{fr-IPA}} to produce correct result or do they check whether the template actually produces the right result on a per-entry basis? --Dan Polansky (talk) 12:11, 12 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
They check if it produces the right result; on several occasions I've seen them correcting their own edits. --Barytonesis (talk) 12:23, 12 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
@DTLHS, Dan Polansky: is there a way to have a tracking category for all entries making use of the second parameter of {{fr-IPA}}? (the respelling parameter, see for example équilatéral) --Barytonesis (talk) 12:32, 12 November 2017 (UTC)Reply
  • Just to add my voice to the ones above: although you're not required to register an account to edit Wiktionary, there are advantages to having an account, and one of them is that people tend to trust your edits more. Maybe that's not fair, but it's the way it is. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 10:12, 14 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

This is the discussion page for an anonymous user who has not created an account yet or who does not use it. We therefore have to use the numerical IP address to identify them. Such an IP address can be shared by several users.
