Welcome message edit

Welcome edit

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! Acolyte of Ice (talk) 12:17, 10 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Creation of "form of" entries edit

Hello, you may be interested in using WT:ACCEL as it makes things easier for a lot of languages. Acolyte of Ice (talk) 13:07, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Acolyte of Ice: Thanks, I thought there was a tool like this but couldn't figure out what to search for. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 13:07, 13 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Randomness from Land Berlin edit

To give you some context: Rhyminreason (talkcontribsglobal account infodeleted contribsnukeabuse filter logpage movesblockblock logactive blocks) and ApisAzuli (talkcontribsglobal account infodeleted contribsnukeabuse filter logpage movesblockblock logactive blocks) belong to someone who geolocates to the Berlin area and who is so addicted to the Etymology scriptorium that they will post long discussions of whatever pops into their head. Usually, this is a sort of quasi-word salad with some actual content mixed in. They're not deliberately trying to make the ES unreadable, but there's always the potential for that if they're given full rein. There's no really adequate way to deal with this, but lately I've taken to quietly reverting them so someone doesn't have to waste time explaining exactly why what they just said was a complete waste of space. Chuck Entz (talk) 13:24, 13 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Chuck Entz: That makes sense, sorry for the undo—I was assuming it was a false alarm from an IP editing a section with a dodgy-looking title, which I saw happen once with a more helpful IP. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 13:30, 13 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Latin Templates edit

Hello, I noticed that you're using some Latin templates incorrectly which breaks a few automated things:

  • for proper nouns, please use "la-proper noun" instead of "la-proper-noun", see here: Template:la-proper noun
  • for noun declensions, please don't specify the gender if it's derived correctly already. And if you do, use a capital letter. See here: Template:la-ndecl

Folko23 (talk) 20:08, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

@Folko23: {{la-proper-noun}} is a redirect to {{la-proper noun}} and listed as a valid alternate form at {{la-proper noun}}. What automated things specifically are breaking? On the gender, I don't recall using lower case so it was presumably a typo but will make sure to double check in future. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 20:11, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
If you look at their contributions for today (so far), they're all corrections of your edits. In spite of two having lowercase gender letters (which they removed), there's no visible difference in the display or the categories between your version and their version on any of the 12 entries in question. Chuck Entz (talk) 21:18, 20 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
There is no visible difference because the lowercase letters have no effect at all, they're invalid parameters. Compare for example the output of {{la-ndecl|animal<3.pure.M>}} and {{la-ndecl|animal<3.pure.m>}}: The first one enforces a non-neuter plural ending while the second variant does nothing at all. And since they're only needed if the auto-detection of a neuter noun fails (which wasn't the case here), I removed the parameter instead of changing it to uppercase.

There are other tools that use the Wiktionary data to generate other formats, and these tools broke on these inputs. That's also how I found them, my edits were done on all entries currently breaking some other tools I know, and it were only a handful edits. The entire rest of the Latin entries are fine. One example is this site that parses the entries to show the data in a different format: https://kaikki.org/

Maybe the tools should be fixed then to properly handle redirects. – Jberkel 19:07, 21 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
That's true. But since these were only a new handful entries, I fixed them here instead. I'll report to the other systems as well. Sorry if this came off as rude.

Cardinal Müller's Latin edit

You may already know this, but there is a distinct Germanic pronunciation tradition of Latin, which Cardinal Müller appears to follow. It isn't unique to Ecclesiastical Latin (for which the Roman pronunciation has been normative since Pius X legislated that it be so). According to one site I stumbled across (and IIRC), it has been considered the normative pronunciation of taxonomic names by some people, at least. “slang” edit

hi, I could be wrong, but I was taught that ‘slang’ is a colloquial term for a colloquialism ChecksMix (talk) 16:40, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @ChecksMix. It can be used loosely in that sense, but it has a more specific meaning in technical contexts and on Wiktionary. See the Glossary entry for slang. Basically "slang" means a term that's only understood within a community. Thieves' cant is an old-fashioned example of slang, "incel slang" is slang that's only understood by people posting on incel forums, etc. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 16:43, 16 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

circular altcaps edit

Re your edit at god: I wonder if it was by the same user who made both him and Him altcaps of each other, and if we should try and search a database dump for other cases where words are circularly defined as altcaps of each other, to see if there are other cases that we want to change... - -sche (discuss) 22:18, 11 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

@-sche: Yep, I looked at the edit history before removing it and what Chuck said there matches it exactly: diff. Same also added the weird numerology stuff. Not sure how bot-detectable any of their remaining contributions are. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 08:39, 12 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
After I posted that, I realized that they were actually treating the years as feet and converting them to (rounded off) meters. If they've done this anywhere else, it might be just a matter of looking for [year] ([number] m). Chuck Entz (talk) 13:12, 12 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Huh! At that point I wonder whether it was even something they were intentionally doing, or if they just had a script to convert numbers that they forgot to turn off, the way I've seen a couple users accidentally bowdlerize a couple entries because they forgot to turn anti-profanity scripts off. :o Anyway, I wasn't suggesting looking through any one user's contribs, but rather searching for just any cases where entries are currently circularly defined as alternative capitalizations of other entries that are defined as alternative capitalizations of them, on the theory that such an arrangement is probably only right in a few cases, but not others. - -sche (discuss) 17:40, 12 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
