User:AntisocialRyan/COVID-19-Related Terms edit

Hi Ryan. Not all of these terms seem to pass WT:ATTEST, which is our rather stringent measure of whether an entry is acceptable in Wiktionary. If you aren't sure, please ask before creating more of them. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 01:28, 18 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Welcome message edit

Below is the standard welcome message, which you may find useful.

Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing page for a similar word, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary, though it may be a bit technical and longwinded. The most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • A glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
  • If you have anything to ask about or suggest, we have several discussion rooms. Feel free to ask any other editors in person if you have any problems or question, by posting a message on their talk page.

You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage. This shows which languages you know, so other editors know which languages you'll be working on, and what they can ask you for help with.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 02:56, 18 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Unsupported Titles edit

I see you added a link to a non-existent unsupported title. Just so you know: if you create one you'll need to ask at the Grease pit to get it set up. These entries require some technical tricks to make them work and the software that does that has to be told which entries need it. Chuck Entz (talk) 07:58, 4 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Chuck_Entz: I wasn't planning on creating it, that looks like a pain, but I assume it's fine to leave it? There are plenty of other non-existent alternate form links but I'm not sure how it works with unsupported titles. AntisocialRyan (talk) 15:58, 4 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

OnlyFans, Snapchat, etc. edit

I think some discussion (perhaps at WT:TR) would be wise before creating too many of these. I believe you can do this with practically any service offering user accounts: "check out my Bebo", "do you have a Napster?", etc (to take some more old-fashioned examples). It doesn't stop them being brand names, for which we have certain policies. Equinox 13:32, 26 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Equinox: Good idea, I just did that. Very confusing which ones can get in, since we have many already. Hopefully we can come to a consensus. AntisocialRyan (talk) 01:02, 27 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for listening. Equinox 01:15, 28 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Woketopia edit

I created Citations:Woketopia. Independent, durable uses are hard to find. Matt Gaetz is frequently quoted, but that's only one independent use. It would be interesting to see non-derogatory uses too, if any exist. The durable uses I found are the un-woke mocking the woke. Vox Sciurorum (talk) 20:38, 29 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Vox Sciurorum: Thanks! This seems too early to get enough of these, but I'm fairly certain it'll catch on soon. Anyways, I also made Citations:Woketopian for one other quote of Matt Gaetz. AntisocialRyan (talk) 00:02, 30 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Recreating failed terms edit

See Talk:obby. One quotation is not enough and that quotation was already added to the citations page during the RFV. J3133 (talk) 16:44, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@J3133 Thanks for letting me know. I was not aware that sense had failed, is there a way to quickly check for that? Either way it seems like no discussion occurred anyway in that decision. Also, any tips on places to find quotations? I've been using Google Scholar and Books but its full of people named "Obby". Thanks! AntisocialRyan (talk) 19:38, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
We usually do not have discussions in RFVs; if after more than a month no one has added quotations meeting the Criteria for inclusion, someone closes the RFV as failed. J3133 (talk) 19:49, 29 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

"I posted so many banger tweets" edit

You may want to revisit your dividing line between nouns and adjectives. Compare "I posted so many banger Tweets yesterday" with "I bought so many tractor parts yesterday", or "I beat so many brainbox politicians in the vote". Nouns can often be used in the position where you would expect an adjective (in an attributive way) but it doesn't mean that every noun is an adjective. There are some useful (but non-conclusive) ways to check this; a good one is comparativity: "how tractor were those parts you bought?", "how banger were those tweets you posted"? This is helpful, thanks for explaining that :) AntisocialRyan (talk) 15:57, 7 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
