Your welcome message, transferred edit

Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout explained (ELE) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing page for a similar word, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary, though it may be a bit technical and longwinded. The most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide to Wikipedia users useful.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • A glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.
  • If you have anything to ask about or suggest, we have several discussion rooms. Feel free to ask any other editors in person if you have any problems or question, by posting a message on their talk page.

You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage. This shows which languages you know, so other editors know which languages you'll be working on, and what they can ask you for help with.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 03:45, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Welcome! edit

It's great that you want to translate LOTR, but just keep in mind that this is a dictionary, not a forum. You can help out by improving or adding entries for words of any language you're comfortable enough with. --WikiTiki89 03:46, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I was wondering if what I was doing was acceptable. Am I breaking any rules by using it as I am? I only have a wish to do what is right. Any correction I will gladly recieve. | Scio (talk) 03:52, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I don't know if we have a rule against it, but some admins would not be very happy if you don't contribute much to the actual dictionary. If you use Wiktionary to look up Latin words, you will no doubt find that some are missing or contain errors. Fixing things like that is a great way to contribute. --WikiTiki89 03:58, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
To be sure, I will fix errors as I find them. However, should I ask about something before I go editing it, especially as a new recruit? | Scio (talk) 04:02, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
It's easier to just start editing and get corrected as you go. But if you need resources, there are bunch of links in the welcome message above (although some of that information is heavily outdated). --WikiTiki89 04:03, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you. | Scio (talk) 04:07, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. I think there was a rule somewhere on some Wiki that just said, "Be bold." In other words, go ahead and make your change, and if it's good, great. If not, someone will correct it and probably explain why. Otherwise nobody would ever get started! --Robert.Baruch (talk) 18:49, 23 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Latin nouns edit

Hi there. There is no need to add inflected forms of Latin nouns manually. We have a bot that (eventually) does it automajically. SemperBlotto (talk) 15:24, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Very well, I will keep that in mind. Thank you for letting me know. | Scio (talk) 15:47, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
What other Latin parts of speech can you do this for? It would save a lot of time to not have to go through the verb forms. | Scio (talk) 15:50, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Adjectives and verbs. It doesn't automatically find the adjectives though - if they don't get done you can ask at User:SemperBlottoBot/feedme. SemperBlotto (talk) 15:55, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the help. | Scio (talk) 16:02, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Tolkienian Latin Lexicon edit

May I suggest that you post these on a dedicated page such as User:Scio/Tolkienian Latin Lexicon? Also, in Tolkeinian literature, I believe hobbit is supposed to be derived from "hole builder" (see the last bit of the etymology at hobbit#Etymology 1. Maybe you could come up with a good concise way to say "hole builder" in Latin, rather than "little person". --WikiTiki89 16:03, 22 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I didn't know you could make pages like that; I will be moving these to a new page.
Also- I didn't know the etymology for Hobbit, so thank you for telling me. I guess I should look into these things more. I will see what I can do about "hole builder." Once again, thank you for your insight. | Scio (talk) 16:12, 22 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
I reckon you have the wrong etymology for Westmarch — the sense is not iter but more like limes, AFAICT. —Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 01:03, 23 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
You are correct. I just now found a site that contains etymologies for Tolkienian words [1]; I will be using it. Than you for the guidance. | Scio (talk) 01:35, 23 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

De Bello Gallico edit

You might be interested in this thing that I was fooling around with to help me understand De Bello Gallico. --Robert.Baruch (talk) 18:49, 24 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, I will be looking through this. | Scio (talk) 14:48, 25 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Creating new pages edit

Hello. When you create a new page, it can actually be better to leave the "edit summary" blank. Then the contents of the new page will be shown in Recent Changes, which is more useful than something like "New entry created". Thanks. Equinox 17:00, 26 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

I suppose it would be. Thank you for letting me know. | Scio (talk) 17:08, 26 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
