Tigrinya is an Ethiopian Semitic language native to Eritrea and Ethiopia. This article contains guidelines for creating and maintaining Wiktionary entries in Tigrinya, beyond the general guidelines of Wiktionary:Entry layout.

Creating Tigrinya entries edit

Tigrinya is considered a limited-documentation language on Wiktionary, so a single attestation of a word is considered sufficient for inclusion under Wiktionary's criteria for inclusion.

Entries should be created using the Ethiopic script, under their standard spelling. Alternative spellings should use the {{alternative spelling of|ti}} template to link to their standard spelling, e.g. ጐይታ (gʷäyta, “master”) and its alternative spelling ጎይታ (goyta).

The de facto convention is to use Eritrean spellings as the standard and for Ethiopian spellings to be treated as alternative spellings, e.g. Eritrean ጸሓይ (ṣäḥay, “sun”) vs. Ethiopian ፀሐይ (ṣ́äḥäy) or ፀሓይ (ṣ́äḥay).

Formatting Tigrinya entries edit

Headers edit

Each entry must contain at least two headers ==Tigrinya== and ===POS===, where "POS" is replaced by the word's part of speech (see WT:POS for possible POS values). For example, a simple entry for a noun would contain:

When multiple languages occur on the same page, they are ordered alphabetically and separated by a horizontal bar (as shown above). For Tigrinya this sometimes occurs with other languages written in the Ethiopic script, such as Ge'ez and Amharic.

Headword-line templates edit

A Tigrinya headword-line such as {{ti-noun}} should be inserted under the POS header. These will automatically display the word and its transliteration, and parameters can be added to specify gender, plural forms, etc.

Lemmas should use the Tigrinya-specific headword-line templates, but for non-lemma forms (e.g. plural nouns) use the {{head}} template with arguments such as {{head|ti|noun plural form}} or {{head|ti|verb form}}.

Lemmas and inflected forms edit

For nouns and adjectives, the masculine singular form is considered the lemma form where applicable. Adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions and interjections are usually invariable.

For verbs the 3ms perfect form is considered the lemma form, rather than the infinitive. So for example ሰበረ (säbärä, “to break”) is tagged as a lemma and ምስባር (məsbar) as an inflected form.

Non-lemma entries should use the appropriate variant of the {{form of}} template (see Category:Form-of templates) to link to the entry for the lemma form, see Category:French headword-line templates. For example at ቦታታት (botatat):

Transliterations edit

Templates will generate transliteration for text in Ge'ez script using Module:Ethi-translit, but manual transliteration should be added with the parameter |tr= when the word contains a geminate consonant since this is not indicated in the script. For example, ትግርኛ (təgrəñña, “Tigrinya”) contains a geminate /ɲ/, so the automatically generated transliteration *təgrña would be incorrect.
