From Middle High German zære (“tears”), plural of zār m, a Central German variant of zaher, from Old High German zahar (“tear”), from Proto-West Germanic *tah(h)r, from Proto-Germanic *tahrą, from Proto-Indo-European *dáḱru. Cognate with English tear, Danish tåre, Gothic 𐍄𐌰𐌲𐍂 (tagr). Possibly related to Träne.
