1. (geology) A unit of sedimentary rock layers of Middle to Late Permian age located in the Permian Basin (Europe), corresponding to the Lopingian (epoch).

     Sedimentation rates in the Zechstein were variable. In general, during periods of carbonate and anhydrite deposition on the shelves, slow sedimentation rates characterized the sediment- starved basinal areas.
