From German Abiturient, from Latin abituriēns, derived from abiī (“to leave”) + -turiō (desiderative suffix). By surface analysis, abitur + -ent.

The term abiturient is used specifically in the context of German secondary school education. In Norway, the terms artianer and artiumskandidat were used for students taking the examen artium, prior to 1982.
