Etymology edit

Variant of Middle Dutch ammirael under influence from cognates of English admiral and Latin admirari (to admire, to respect), from Old French amiral etc., from Medieval Latin amiralis, from Arabic أَمِير (ʔamīr, commander) + -alis (-al). As a naval commander, used as a calque of Italian ammiraglio, q.v. Doublet of emir.
