Borrowed from Catalan anxova (anchovy), in turn from Spanish anchova, from Ligurian anciôa, from Vulgar Latin *apiuva, from Latin aphyē, from Ancient Greek ἀφύη (aphúē, small fry). Doublet of anchoa and anchova.
