Adjective edit
bairisch (strong nominative masculine singular bairischer, not comparable)
- (historical) of the Bavarian tribe, especially before the creation of the Holy Roman Empire
- (linguistics) of the Bavarian dialects of the German language
- Obsolete form of bayrisch (“of Bavaria in other contexts”).
Usage notes edit
- The above distinction between bayrisch and bairisch is usually maintained in historic and linguistic scientific literature; otherwise only the ay-spelling is usual today.
- In the north of Bavaria, Upper Franconian dialects are spoken. In the south-west of Bavaria, Swabian dialects are spoken. On the other hand, most dialects in Austria and South Tyrol are Bavarian.
