Etymology edit
From pajtárs, the old variant of pajtás where the paj- syllable was (mis)identified with baj. The explanation as baj (“battle”) + társ (“companion”) is not likely. Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries.[1][2]
