Inherited from Latin vōcem, accusative singular of vōx, from Proto-Italic *wōks, from Proto-Indo-European *wṓkʷs (cf. the borrowed doublet voce, which replaced it in modern Romanian). Compare Aromanian boatsi, Sicilian buci, Sardinian boghe, Dalmatian baud, Istriot boûz, Ladino boz, Spanish voz.
