From Vulgar Latin, Late Latin bovārius or boārius (“cow herder”), from Latin bovārius or boārius (“of cattle”), from bōs (“ox”). By surface analysis, bove + -aro. Compare French bouvier, Portuguese boieiro, Romanian boar, Spanish boyero. Doublet of boario.
