Etymology edit
From Spanish chocolate, from a Nahuatl [Term?] word, though it is not clear precisely which one. See chocolate for more.

Usage notes edit
In the past some dictionaries prescribed a feminine gender, likely because of analogy with terms that have the ending -ade. This prescription does not seem to have had any basis in common usage or etymology, however.
