From Proto-West Germanic *þringwan, from Proto-Germanic *þrinhwaną, from Proto-Indo-European *trenkʷ- (to beat, hew, press).

Cognate with Old Saxon thringan (Low German dringen), Dutch dringen, Old English þringan (English thring), Old Norse þryngva, Gothic 𐌸𐍂𐌴𐌹𐌷𐌰𐌽 (þreihan).
