From Proto-Balto-Slavic, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰur, zero-grade of *dʰwer-, *dʰwor- (door, gate). Balto-Slavic cognates include Lithuanian dùrys, Old Church Slavonic двьри (dvĭri). Other Indo-European cognates include Lithuanian foris, Sanskrit द्वार् (dvā́r), Ancient Greek θύρα (thúra) and Old English duru (English door).
