Inherited from Old Galician-Portuguese evangeo (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria). A semi-leaned borrowing from Ecclesiastical Latin ēvangelium, from Ancient Greek εὐαγγέλιον (euangélion, good news). Compare Portuguese evangelho.
