From Middle English eyles, eieles, equivalent to eye +‎ -less. Compare West Frisian eachleas (eyeless), Dutch oogloos (eyeless), German augenlos (eyeless), Swedish ögalös (eyeless), Icelandic augnalaus (eyeless).
