Maltese edit
Etymology edit
Borrowed from Sicilian frusta or Italian frusta, both probably from Latin fustis. Sicilian chiefly uses the Arabic borrowing zotta, itself cognate with native Maltese sawt. On the other hand, the Maltese -o- would seem to imply a fairly early borrowing before the phonemicisation of [ʊ].
