Etymology edit
From Middle Irish fúasclaid (“release, redeem”), a late form of fúaslaici, fúasailci formed by metathesis, from Old Irish do·fúasailci (“release, dissolve”), through loss of the first preverb. Cognate with Irish fuascail.
