From German fungieren, from Latin fungī,[1] present active infinitive of fungor (“I perform, I execute”), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewg- (“to enjoy”). Cognate with Norwegian Bokmål fungere, Norwegian Nynorsk fungere, fungera, Danish fungere, Dutch fungeren, English function, fungible, Czech fungovat, Slovak fungovať, Italian fungere, Spanish fungir, French fonctionner.
