From Proto-Turkic *kāĺ. Cognate with dialectal Azerbaijani qaş (“mountain chain; slanting trees in the attic of the house”), dialectal Turkish kaş (“steep cliffs, cliffs; hill, mountain; border, embankment made by piling soil in vineyards and gardens; wall, the top of the wall”), also dialectal Uyghur [script needed] (qaş, “side”).
