Ultimately from Old Norse garðr (“enclosed space, yard”), from Proto-Germanic *gardaz (“court, yard, enclosure”), from *ǵʰortós (“enclosure”), from *ǵʰer- (“to enclose”). Cognate with Irish garraí (“garden; yard, enclosure”) and English yard.
