Ultimately from Old Norse garðr (enclosed space, yard), from Proto-Germanic *gardaz (court, yard, enclosure), from *ǵʰortós (enclosure), from *ǵʰer- (to enclose). Cognate with Irish garraí (garden; yard, enclosure) and English yard.
